English actress well-known for her performance as Bess in the award-winning indie film Breaking the Waves. In 2017 she appeared in the National Geographic original TV series Genius. In 2019, she began starring in the HBO historical miniseries, Chernobyl .

She graduated from the University of Bristol with an English degree.

She was rejected from the first drama school she applied to.

She married Jack Waters in 1995. They have a son named Dylan and a daughter named Juliet.

Helena Bonham Carter turned down the role in Breaking the Waves that eventually went to Watson.
