ABOUT ERWIN SCHULHOFF

Ingenious composer and pianist whose career ended and was nearly forgotten because of the Nazi acquisition of power in Germany.

He studied at Prague Conservatory, Vienna, Leipzig, and Cologne, where he was educated by Claude Debussy , Max Reger , Fritz Steinbach, and Willi Thern. He was awarded the Mendelssohn Prize twice, first in 1913 and again in 1918.

He was one of the first classically trained musicians to see the virtues of jazz music. He was also open-minded enough to embrace Dadaism.

His great-uncle was the famed Julius Schulhoff.

His early mentor was Antonin Dvorak .
