Jazz singer of "Don't Go to Strangers" and "Save Your Love for Me" who often performed in the shadow of her better know fellow singer Etta James .

Competing in a local talent contest at age fifteen brought her to the attention of Buddy Johnson , who invited her to perform with his big band.

Her most memorable recordings came during her thirty-year partnership with saxophonist Earl Hines , with the two performing all over the world.

She was born in Aiken, South Carolina and moved to New York with her family at the age of three.

The final recording Jones released was a tribute to Billie Holiday .
