She grew up in Selma, Alabama, the front line of the Civil Rights Movement.
She founded Ebony magazine, which she envisioned as the Life magazine for black people.
She met her future husband while in graduate school in Chicago.
She paved the way for such African-American fashion models as Tyra Banks .
