The sixth Archbishop of New York, a position he held from 1939 to 1967.
He was the first baseman for his high school's baseball team.
He presided over the weddings of both Robert and Edward Kennedy.
His father was a shoemaker and grocer of Irish descent.
He decided not support fellow Catholic John F. Kennedy during the latter's campaign for the Presidency.
