Stanford quarterback instituted the T-formation, leading his college team to an undefeated 1940 season and a Rose Bowl win.

He joined a Stanford team that in his 1939 sophomore year, won only one game, leading the coach to install the T-formation.

An intelligent quarterback, he found himself a natural fit in the new system, which relied on deception over brute strength.

He had three daughters with his wife, Martha.

While he and his coach installed the T-formation in college football, George Halas installed it in the pros some years before.
