Played the cafe owner René Artois in the British TV comedy 'Allo 'Allo! He made appearances in all 84 episodes of the series.
The E at the end of his family name was a clerical error - he called it a "sign of a mis-spelt youth." He played rugby as a youth.
Prior to getting his most famous role, he had parts on Coronation Street and Come Back Mrs. Noah. While working in radio, he interviewed The Beatles in 1965. He made his television debut in 1968, playing a minor role in the BBC drama Champion House.
He was born in the town of Huddersfield and was an only child in the family.
Among his other appearances, he had a small part in the Terry Gilliam film Brazil as a desk clerk.
