ABOUT GRACE ELIZABETH KING

Louisiana-born author who wrote biographies, histories, and stories set in her home state, including Monsieur Motte and Le Dame de Sainte Hermine. She received an honorary degree from Tulane University in 1915.

She was born in New Orleans and, in her youth, was a pupil of Charles Gayarre, a fellow Louisiana writer and historian.

Her most famous works, published between 1893 and 1932, include New Orleans: The Place and the People; Memories of a Southern Woman of Letters; and Balcony Stories.

She was one of seven children born to William Woodson King and Sarah Ann Miller King.

She and Mark Twain were literary contemporaries and friends.
