He earned his first acting roles on Broadway in productions of Assassins and War Games. He studied theater at the University of Northern Colorado .

He had a recurring role on the Showtime series House of Lies . Outside of acting, he is also a writer and has penned both a screenplay and a play. He has acted in the popular series Grey's Anatomy since 2017.

He has a son named Asa.

He and Miley Cyrus both lent their voice-acting talents to the 2008 animated feature Bolt.
