ABOUT GUS DORAIS

Pioneering football player at Notre Dame who became a prominent head coach at Gonzaga and the University of Detroit.

He and teammate Knute Rockne took the summer of 1913 to develop and practice the forward pass in football, which led their team to an unprecedented scoring streak the next season.

A three sport coach in football, basketball, and baseball, he focused mostly on football at Detroit, leading the team to the national championship in 1928.

He was born in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin.

He was a friend of Knute Rockne after the two teamed up at Notre Dame in a game against the heavily-favored Army, where they tried the forward pass for the first time.
