He got his start working alongside Fred Anderson.
He is known for using Afro-Cuban, Indian, and African percussion instruments.
His family moved from Monroe, Louisiana to Evanston, Illinois when he was a young man.
He has collaborated with jazz pianist Herbie Hancock .
