Italian writer, poet, and historian who was known as something of a dilettante. His published works include Humdrum; The Last of the Medici; Memoirs of an Aesthete; and The Soul's Gymnasium.

He was born near Florence, Italy and later studied in England.

He joined the English Royal Air Force in 1939 and served in the Mediterranean region.

His father was Arthur Acton, a British art collector. His mother, Hortense Mitchell, was an American financial heiress.
