Lead vocalist and songwriter for the post-punk band Joy Division, the group that released the songs "She's Lost Control" and "Transmission."

His life and death has been dramatized in the films 24 Hour Party People in 2002 and Control in 2007.

He married his high school friend, Deborah Woodruff, on August 23, 1975; his daughter, Natalie, was born on April 16, 1979.
