ABOUT ISMAIL GULGEE

Self-taught award-winning portrait painter and abstract artist associated with the Action Painting movement. Heavily influenced by Islamic calligraphy.

He taught himself to paint while studying civil engineering at Harvard and Columbia.

He gained recognition early on as a portraitist especially after he painted the entire Afghan Royal Family.

He married Zarrin Gulgee, with whom he had one son. He and his wife were found murdered in their home in 2007.

He and Faraz Anwar were both natives of Pakistan.
