Canadian pioneer who spent many years in the country's Arctic wilderness charting the Baffin Islands and the local fauna.
He was sent to the still-unknown region of the Baffin Islands by the Geological Survey of Canada.
With help from the native tribes, he discovered where Canada's Blue Geese bred.
His mother wanted him to become a minister.
He was inspired to study nature by the writings of Henry David Thoreau .
