An Estonian-American, Indo-Europeanist who is best known for his Hittite Etymological Dictionary.

He was born and raised in Tallinn, Estonia.

He was a student of French philologist Georges Dumezil.

His brother Martin Puhvel is also a linguist.

He was born in the same country as fellow linguist Jakob Hurt .
