He began his career as a singer in Broadway productions.
He was nominated for two Primetime Emmy Awards and won a Tony Award in his career. His last on-screen role was as Damon Runyon in The Private Files of J. Edgar Hoover.
He was married to his second wife, Shirley Jones , from 1956 to 1974.
He had one of his last roles in The Eiger Sanction, released in 1975, with Clint Eastwood .
