He played college football for Boston College, where he was both a quarterback and a halfback.

In 1964 he was both the 1st overall pick in the AFL draft, and the 16th overall pick in the NFL draft.

He was born in Boston, Massachusetts, and died in Waltham, Massachusetts.

In 1966 he was traded to the Chicago bears for Mike Ditka .
