ABOUT JACK SCHAEFER
An American author of western-themed novels, he is particularly known for Shane, a work that was adapted by George Stevens into a critically- acclaimed film. His other works include The Canyon, Company of Cowards, and Tales from the West.
He graduated from Oberlin College and briefly attended graduate school at Columbia University. He subsequently had a long career as a journalist.
He earned his literary reputation as an author of Westerns; however, he never actually visited the American West.
He was married twice. He lived in Santa Fe, New Mexico with his second wife.
His 1963 novel, Monte Walsh, was made into a movie starring Lee Marvin .
