British ornithologist and author whose published works include Check List of the Birds of South Africa and The Red Book: Wildlife in Danger.
He worked in the 1920s as a collector of bird-related artifacts for London's world-famous British Museum.
He earned the World Wildlife Fund's Gold Medal for his conservation work on behalf of the International Council for Bird Preservation.
Born in London, England, he moved to South Africa in his early twenties to work on Natal Province farms.
He and renowned naturalist John James Audubon both studied birds.
