Played the role of LAPD Sgt. Joe Friday on the radio and television series, Dragnet. He played Artie Green in the classic American movie Sunset Boulevard, released in 1950.
He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force during World War II but filed for discharge to take care of his mother and grandmother.
He founded the production company, Mark VII Limited. In addition to acting, he also directed many episodes of Dragnet and other TV series.
He married his fourth wife, Opal Wright in 1980. None of his marriages lasted longer than seven years.
Harry Morgan starred with him in Dragnet.
