First baseman who played in MLB from 1941 to 1942, and from 1946 to 1948, for the Chicago White Sox and Boston Red Sox.
He only played 10 games in his first MLB stint, before leaving for World War II.
He is a storied and heroic World War II veteran, who earned a Silver Star, two Distinguished Flying Cross awards, and four Air Medals.
He was born in Epps, Louisiana.
As a member of the Red Sox he was coached by Joe McCarthy .
