Republican Senator from the state of South Dakota from 1981 to 1987.
He served in the United States Army during World War II and then graduated from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1945.
He narrowly lost his Senate seat to then-Representative Tom Daschle , who would later become the US Senate Majority Leader.
His father was named Samuel and his mother was named Mary and he was a second-generation Lebanese-American.
He ran in the 1980 election against George McGovern for the United States Senate and beat him.
