The world's first test cricketer to die, he was considered one of the greatest slow bowlers of his era.
He began his cricketing career in the 1850s.
He scored more than 3,000 runs in first-class cricket, playing primarily for Surrey, Sussex, and Hampshire.
He was born in Petworth, Sussex, and died in Mitcham, Surrey.
He was considered the only bowler of his time to defeat W.G. Grace .
