ABOUT JAMES WELDON JOHNSON

Wrote "Lift Every Voice and Sing" and "Tell Me, Dusky Maiden." He was an important leader in the NAACP.

He graduated from Atlanta University in 1894.

He was memorialized with a 22-cent U.S. postage stamp in 1988.

He was the son of Helen Louise Dillet and James Johnson.

He was appointed U.S. consul at Puerto Cabello from 1906 until 1908 by President Theodore Roosevelt .
