ABOUT JAY BERWANGER
University of Chicago halfback, known as the one man football team. He won the first ever Downtown Athletic Club Trophy, renamed the Heisman the following year.
At the University of Chicago he did everything from calling plays, to punting, passing and blocking.
In 1935 he received a telegram informing him that he won a trophy for the most valuable football player east of the Mississippi, which a year later would be called the Heisman.
He grew up in Dubuque, Iowa.
He played in a 1934 football game against the University of Michigan and their center Gerald R. Ford , leaving the future president with a distinctive scar under his left eye.
