Jean Garrigue

ABOUT JEAN GARRIGUE

Guggenheim Fellowship recipient whose poetic works include The Ego and the Centaur, The Animal Hotel, and The Monument Rose. Her 1964 work, Country Without Maps, received a National Book Award nomination.

She lived in Europe for several years as an American expatriate.

She taught at Smith College and Queens College.

She had many romantic relationships with both male and female writers. Her lovers included Delmore Schwartz and Josephine Herbst.

Her work was highly praised by fellow poet and one-time lover Stanley Kunitz .
