The guiding force of the Grateful Dead during their thirty-year career who was ranked the thirteenth-greatest guitarist of all time by Rolling Stone magazine.
He lost two thirds of his right middle finger in a wood chopping accident and it gave him his unique style of guitar playing.
Garcia was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994.
He got married to Sara Ruppenthal on April 27, 1963, then to Carolyn Adams on December 31, 1981, and finally to Deborah Koons on February 14, 1994. He had four daughters.
Bob Weir , the rhythm guitarist for the Grateful Dead, spread Garcia's ashes into the Ganges River in India on April 4, 1996.
