She studied education at Temple University and planned on becoming a teacher. Her journey towards a musical career began through spoken word performances.

She is a three-time Grammy Award winner and has been nominated for ten more Grammy Awards as well.

She had a son named Jeff with her ex-fiancé and drummer John Roberts. She was married to Lyzel Williams from 2001 to 2007. In 2016, she married Mike Dobson; however they split the following year.

She acted alongside Janet Jackson in Tyler Perry 's movie Why Did I Get Married? in 2007.
