One of the top heavyweight contenders of the 1970s, fought everyone from Muhammad Ali to George Foreman , compiling a career record of 34-19-2.
Eleven fights into his professional career, he was matched up against the veteran Earnie Shavers , who had a 42-2 record; Young was knocked out, but it would be his only loss over the next three years.
In one of the biggest matches of the decade, he fought against the top-ranked boxer in the world, Ken Norton , in 1977; Norton won the fight in a controversial decision that left many Young supporters incensed.
He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
In addition to fighting the greats, he also trained with them - he was the sparring partner of Joe Frazier .
