ABOUT JOAN BROWN

Painter associated with the second generation of the Bay Area Figurative Movement.

She graduated from the San Francisco Art Institute, where she studied with Elmer Bischoff . She had her first exhibition at the Whitney Museum in New York at the age of 22.

Her figurative paintings combined personal symbols with bright colors and cartoon-like drawings.

She was married to sculptor Manuel Neri for four years.

She was a follower of Sathya Baba and undertook many pilgrimages to his ashram in Puttaparthi, India.
