Politician and member of the Democratic Party who became the junior United States Senator from Indiana in 2013 after serving 6 years in the US House of Representatives.

In 1977, he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Government from the University of Notre Dame.

In 2013, he co-sponsored the Senate bill to reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act.

He had two children with his wife Jill, who he married in 1979.

When he was elected to the Senate, he began serving alongside fellow Indianian senator, Dan Coats .
