ABOUT JOHN F. CARLSON
Impressionist painter whose works were exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago and the National Academy of Design. His instructional book "Elementary Principles of Landscape Paintings" was printed several times over the decades.
He studied with artist Lovell Birge Harrison at the Woodstock, New York-based Byrdcliffe Colony.
He received the prestigious Carnegie Prize in 1918.
He was born in Sweden. He and his family immigrated to Buffalo, New York, in 1884.
He and Jack Vettriano were both lesser-known Impressionist painters.
