Remembered for his roles in such celebrated films as The Godfather, The Conversation, Dog Day Afternoon and The Deer Hunter , this acclaimed actor was known for his multi-layered portrayals of violent and unstable, yet vulnerable, characters.
He met his future artistic collaborator, Al Pacino , while working for the New York City office of Standard Oil.
A stage performer as well as a screen actor, he appeared in New York productions of Measure for Measure, Line, and The Indian Wants the Bronx.
Born in Revere, Massachusetts, he grew up in a family of Italian heritage.
From 1976 until his death from lung cancer in 1978, he was romantically involved with the acclaimed film actress Meryl Streep .
