American Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church who served as the Archbishop of both New Orleans and Chicago.

He earned degrees in philosophy and theology from the College of the Propagation of the Faith.

His time as Archbishop of Chicago was noted for the disappearance of one million dollars of church funds from the Chicago diocese.

His father was the deputy chief of the St. Louis Fire Department.

He was was appointed Auxiliary Bishop of St. Louis and Titular Bishop of Apollonia by Pope Pius XII in 1947.
