ABOUT JOHN HENRY NIEMEYER

German painter and Yale University art teacher. His best-known works include Sancta Simplicitas, Where?, and The Braid.

He trained in Paris at the renowned Ecole des Beaux Arts, studying with such teachers as Adolphe Yvon and Jean-Leon Gerome.

He painted an 1876 portrait of Yale president Theodore Dwight Woolsey.

He was born and raised in Bremen, Germany. In the 1840s, he relocated to the United States, living first in Ohio and then in New York.

Artist Frederic Remington was one of Niemeyer's famous students at the Yale School of Fine Arts.
