He was married to Geraldine Ferraro , a U.S. House of Representatives member from New York. He was a central figure in the scrutiny that followed her Democratic nomination for the vice presidency in 1984.

His wife was running with Walter Mondale , who lost in a landslide to the incumbent president Ronald Reagan.
