Joseph Auslander
ABOUT JOSEPH AUSLANDER
American poet, author, and translator whose works include Hell in Harness and Sunrise Trumpets. He was appointed in 1937 as the first Poet Laureate of the United States; he held the position until 1941.
He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and later lived in Florida. He published his debut poetry collection, Sunrise Trumpets, in 1924.
His writings form a special collection at the University of Miami.
He was married to Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Audrey Wurdemann. The couple settled in Washington D.C.'s Cathedral Heights neighborhood.
He was a literary contemporary of English Poet Laureate John Masefield .
