ABOUT JOSEPH KUTTER

Expressionist painter whose best-known works included "The Wooden Horse" and "Luxembourg." His late paintings of clowns (i.e., his 1936 work "Clown avec accordeon") were expressions of his pain and inner turmoil upon facing a mysterious and long-lasting illness.

He studied art at the Munich Academy and at the Luxembourg Ecole d'Artisans. While at Munich, he became acquainted with Wilhelm Leibl's style of painting.

His work was popular in France and Belgium, but Adolf Hitler's rise to power hindered his popularity in Germany as he was deemed to be a degenerate artist.

He was the son of the photographer Paul Kutter.

He was greatly influenced by the work of post-Impressionist painter Paul Cezanne .
