ABOUT KATHRYN TUCKER WINDHAM

Southern author who became famous for several books of ghost stories, including the 1969 collection, "13 Alabama Ghosts and Jeffrey." She also became known as a storyteller, performing both for live audiences and on Alabama Public Radio.

Her childhood experiences inspired her to write the book, Alabama: One Big Front Porch. She graduated from Huntingdon College in 1939 and subsequently became a reporter for both The Birmingham News and The Alabama Journal.

She was the subject of a 2004 documentary film called Kathryn: The Story of a Teller.

She was born in Selma, Alabama, and she grew up in nearby Thomasville. Her cousin owned a newspaper called The Thomasville Times for which she began writing when she was just twelve years old.

Harper Lee , the famed author of To Kill a Mockingbird, was another gifted Alabama storyteller.
