Canadian journalist who began working as a correspondent for Dateline NBC in 1995. He has won acclaim for his coverage of events like the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests. He was portrayed in Family Guy in 2023.

He began his journalism career working for the Saskatoon Star Phoenix newspaper in Saskatchewan.

He is the stepfather of Friends actor Matthew Perry . He appeared in an episode of Seinfeld .

He married Suzanne Langford in 1981. They have children named Caitlin, Emily, Willy and Madeleine.
