Central figure of the Watergate scandal who was also a successful entrepreneur and WWII fighter ace.

He was a triple ace in the European theater in WWII, with more than 14 kills to his credit. After returning home from war, invented the Miracle Ear hearing aid, which he later sold for $139 million.

His name was on the $25,000 cashier's check deposited by one of the Watergate burglars, and he was one of journalist Bob Woodward 's earliest calls in investigating the Watergate story.

He grew up in Saint Paul, Minnesota and grew up on a farm in Wisconsin, attending a one-room schoolhouse for 11 years.

He was ultimately cleared of any wrongdoing, but it was his check that linked the Watergate hotel break-ins to Richard Nixon 's campaign.
