He attended Amherst College where he invented two automatic railroad car couplers and a ballot box to register votes. He attended Columbia Law School.
He invented a non-pickable door lock when he was 14.
He married Constance Plummer on February 15, 1887. They had three sons together.
He was a fan of Andre Michelin .
