The Father of Chicano Music who wrote musical pieces that became Latin American chart-toppers in the U.S. and standards in Mexico.

He started making music in the 1940s, merging American blues and swing with Spanish-language songs.

His most enduring songs were corridos, traditional Mexican ballads that, in his versions, talked about the struggles of a bilingual life in the U.S.

He was married twice and had two sons, along with two stepchildren.

His song "Nunca Jamás (Never Again)," became a standard part of of the repertoire of many Mexican musicians, including Jose Feliciano .
