ABOUT LEE WULFF
Remembered for his contributions to the sport of fly fishing and for his conservation efforts on behalf of Atlantic Salmon, Wulff was also a visual artist and the author of books such as Lee Wulff's Handbook of Freshwater Fishing (1939) and Trout on a Fly (1986).
He transferred from San Diego State College to Stanford University, earning an engineering degree from the latter school. He later moved to Paris, France, where he studied art at the Academie Delecluse.
He died in his mid-eighties when a small plane he was piloting crashed during takeoff.
The son of New York native Charles Wulff and Norwegian immigrant Lilly Wulff, he spent his youth in Valdez, Alaska and San Diego, California. With his first wife, Helen Riha, he had sons named Allan and Barry. His three other marriages were to Ella Manuel, Kay Gillette, and national fly fishing champion Joan Salvato Wulff.
He and Matt Hayes both rose to prominence through their skill as anglers.
