Chinese-American children's author best known for such stories and novels as The All American Slurp and Ties that Bind, Ties that Break.
Her early literary works include Who's Hu? and White Serpent Castle.
Her 1989 work, Island of Ogres, won the Washington State Governor's Award for Writers.
To honor her Japanese husband's heritage, she wrote several works of Samurai-themed fiction.
She and fellow Chinese-born author Bette Bao Lord both became known for their works of children's fiction.
