ABOUT LEONORA CARRINGTON
Associated with the surrealist movement of the 1930s, this painter and fiction writer was also one of the forces behind the Mexican Women's Liberation movement of the 1970s. Her most famous works include the paintings Self-Portrait and The Horses of Lord Candlestick and the novel The Hearing Trumpet.
She received her early artistic training at Mrs. Penrose's Academy of Art in Florence, Italy; the Chelsea School of Art in London, England; and the Ozenfant Academy in London. She relocated to Mexico in the 1960s.
During the 1930s, she had a romantic relationship with the renowned German surrealist artist Max Ernst .
Born in Lancashire, England, to an English textile merchant father and an Irish mother, she grew up with brothers named Arthur, Patrick, and Gerald. Her first marriage was to Mexican writer Renato Leduc; her later marriage, to Emericko Weisz, produced sons named Gabriel and Pablo.
She was mentored by Surrealist movement founder Andre Breton .
