Canadian chemical engineer who greatly improved battery technology with his lithium and alkaline batteries.

He went to work for the manufacturer of the Eveready brand batteries after finishing his studies and serving a brief stint in the Army.

His batteries revolutionized commerce with their staying power. Before them, most battery-run devices had at best a couple minutes of run time.

He had one son and two daughters with his wife Beverly Ann.

He and Alessandro Volta both advanced the science and technology of batteries.
