Mechanical engineer who created the cylinder lock, the most commonly used type of lock for generations.
He was more interested in portraits than in locks until the age of 29.
He invented what he called the Infallible Bank Lock and named it after himself.
His father was also a locksmith and an inventor.
He and Samuel Morse both started out as aspiring painters.
