ABOUT LISA BUFANO

An American interdisciplinary performance artist. Her artistic practice intertwined doll-making, fabric work, animation, and dance. The AXIS Dance Company was her touring companion from 2006 to 2010.

Following the loss of her lower legs, as well as most of her fingers and thumbs, she embarked on her journey into the world of performance and dance. A professor at the University of Linz, who was conducting research on the lives of amputees, stumbled upon her web page. Impressed by her talent, he invited her to showcase her skills in Vienna.

She was a competitive gymnast as a child. She took her own life at the age of 40.

Originally hailing from Boston, Massachusetts, she moved to San Francisco, California in December 2011.

She said that Hans Bellmer was an influence.
